Organ Donation Press Conference on Steps of City Hall with Dan Garodnick, City Council Member! Thursday May 17th @ Noon!May 17, 2012
Organ Donation Press Conference on Steps of City Hall with Dan Garodnick, City Council Member! Thursday May 17th @ Noon! * There were less than 200 Liver Transplants in NYS last year….
New York is far behind the national average in organ donation: only 9% of the population has registered in New York City, 18% in New York State, compared to the national average of 38%. This means that people in New York wait longer for a transplant than in other States. And it means that hundreds of people die waiting – last year 612 died in NY waiting for a transplant. So getting more organ donors is truly a matter of life or death.
The purpose of the press conference is to highlight this crisis in organ donation and to support passage of Lauren’s Law (Mandated Choice) which is currently pending in the New York State Legislature. Lauren’s Law would require each person getting or renewing a driver’s license or registering to vote to make an election (either “yes” or “not at this time”) with regard to organ donation. Currently people are not required to make such an election.
In order to maximize press coverage, we would like to have you stand behind the speakers, along with others who are transplant recipients, on the waiting list, living donors or donor families. Even if you don’t want to stand there, please come and be part of the audience to show the media that this issue matters to many people.
So please join us at the press conference to show that organ donation is a critical issue that requires media attention.
We look forward to being with you on Thursday May 17 at 11:30am on the steps of City Hall.
