Hepatitis B: Get Tested

What is Hepatitis B? Hepatitis B is a liver disease that affects over one million Americans, especially among immigrants. Left untreated, it can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis. Unfortunately, it does not always show obvious symptoms, and as many as 2 out of 3 people don’t know that they’re infected. However, treatments are available to prevent hepatitis-related liver cancer and the transmission of hepatitis B to others. A quick blood test can determine whether you or your family members have hepatitis B and prevent the progression of the disease. More information on hepatitis B can be found here.

National Hepatitis Testing Day is May 19th.Find a testing site using these links:

Hepatitis B affects 300 million people globally,  and is the leading cause of liver cancer in the world. Team HBV is an intercollegiate, interscholastic student outreach group that strives to increase awareness, advocacy and clinical support for communities at risk for hepatitis B. Our outreach efforts focus on raising awareness about the need for screenings, the available treatments and risk factors, and supporting new government health policies for hepatitis B.

  • Establish a network of student leaders at educational institutions throughout NYC to be part of Team HBV and the national Jade Ribbon Campaign.
  • Provide training, volunteer & internship opportunities to student leaders so as to develop expertise in HBV among emerging public health leaders.

In 2011, we had a press conference on the steps of City Hall and held a screening event in Union Square. In 2012 & 2013, students and volunteers participated in awareness activities in each of the boroughs and then assembled centrally to join in the World Hepatitis Alliance’s Guinness World Record Attempt which we helped to successfully set! 2013 Team HBV volunteers in Times Square for World Hepatitis Day. Around the world, people are ignoring hepatitis B – “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” Internships There are numerous opportunities available for students to assist NYC Hepatitis B Coalition member organizations through internships and volunteer projects.
